Why I Maintain A Journal.

So, a lot of people have asked me why I use ‘Dear Diary‘ in my blog posts, or why I call my blog ‘The Shubhster Diaries.‘ There’s a very obvious explanation to this, actually. Every time I use the phrase ‘Dear Diary,‘ followed by a paragraph, I’m opening up to all of you. The next time I use ‘Dear Diary,‘ know that it’s because I’m actually quoting from the pages of my diary. Those are the questions I ask myself. Those are the thoughts that cross my mind a million times a day.

I’ve probably written a lot of stuff in my diary that should actually be heard. Also, I write because it’s my way of escaping reality for a little while. I don’t write my diary because I want to open it some day and look back at life, I do it because it’s a great way to think aloud without actually having to say anything aloud.

Now, I know that not a lot of people maintain a diary because it feels like too much work and it’s very old-school. In fact, it reallyΒ is a lot of work. Pouring out liquid emotions in the form of words can be a real task! I’ll admit. I’m not even regular! I write anywhere between two to twenty pages, depending on how much I have to ramble. I don’t write every single day, either.

I write when I have no one to talk to. I don’t blame anybody for being busy when I need them- everyone has their own lives to get on with. It’s just that, my diary doesn’t ask me any questions. It just lets me ramble on and on- scribbling on its pages with purple ink, scratching out words, making senseless loops on the margins when I’m not paying attention- it just lets me be.

With my diary, I have no emotional barriers. I can let my thoughts flow out of me. With every word that I write in my diary, my heart feels lighter. I really feel much better after I’ve finished writing the entry for the day. People who maintain a journal would know how relaxing a 5-page rant can be.

My diary is not just some notebook. It’s so much more than that. I feel as if my day is missing something if I haven’t written it all down. My diaryΒ my best friend. It’s my Horcrux. Also, when you’re writing in your diary, you can be soΒ un- apologetically yourself. No one’s watching you. You can say exactly what you mean. And that can be such a good release for your emotions. Take it from someone who knows.

You don’t have to maintain a diary, guys. You can start off with just writing down your thoughts whenever you feel like you need to vent. Writing can be a great way to de-stress. There’s no harm in trying, is there?

Cheerio! Xx

  2. I like your post on the reasons why you write a diary. I would like to differ on one small detail. I for my part use the diary which I once passionately wrote and the letters to my sweetheart as a bridge to the past which defines my identity in the present. Thanks for dropping in at my blog!
