It is not often that I realize how lucky I am to have so many people in my life. I feel like I don’t give them enough credit. Maybe after all that we have been through, I just assume that they would have my back when I need it the most. And I really hate it when I’m not able to be their support when they need me. It isn’t fair. I’m afraid I might end up losing the only close people in my life, because I wasn’t able to be there for them when they needed me; they’ve been there for me through thick and thin. So why shouldn’t I? I guess it’s all about the priorities.”
I’m sure that we all have those few people in our lives who would do anything for us and let’s face it, we would do anything for them. They are the ones who make it to the top of your priority list. But at times, we just assume that they’d do the same for us. We tend to start taking them for granted, thinking that they’d still be there while we go about our own lives, not caring about them. I’m not implying that you don’t care about them anymore; just that maybe they don’t top your list of priorities anymore, which is sad enough.
We live in a world where things are loved and people are used; we’ve forgotten that it should actually be the other way round. People are used as the means to others’ ends. There are times when we ignore the ones we love and don’t even feel guilty about it. It’s only when you lose them or they start distancing themselves that you realize how much they meant to you. We never realize the true worth of someone unless and until we see how badly their absence affects us.
“Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.”
-Stephen R. Covey
Don’t you think it’s high time that we reached out to them? Don’t you think that we owe them an apology and a ‘thank you’? It’s all about the priorities. People who love you will always stick by your side, no matter what. But once they make up their minds to let go, they will never turn back. It takes a lot for them to take such a drastic decision, but aren’t we at fault too because we didn’t make time for them? One can only get caught up in his own world so much that he forgets about the people who matter in life. And it’s a really sad, sad thing that people worry about success more than their loved ones.
There can be a million reasons for your absence from your best friend/ lover/ partner/ family’s life, but none so good enough to justify your actions, especially if they have been nothing but supportive in the past. If nothing else, they deserve to be treated better than the way they’ve been treated. These are the people who will stick around for a long time and leave only when they are hurt to an extent that they cannot take it anymore.
“You need to make time for your family no matter what happens in your life”
― Matthew Quick,
Now, let’s focus on repairing the damage (if there is any). Sit down with them, talk to them. Apologize. Tell them why you have been absent for such a long time and don’t try to justify what you did, because no matter how right you think it was to ditch them, it was wrong. Be sincere with your apologies. And I’m sure they would still understand the reason for your absence, because that is what loved ones do- they’re the most forgiving and understanding people in our lives. Are you sure you want to lose someone as sweet as them?
So if you have someone who stuck around even when you went about your own life, blissfully ignorant about about them, and loves you inspire of all that, go and give them a bear-hug. They deserve it. Tell them how much you have missed them. Tell them that they mean the world to you. Tell them that you’d (try to) never do this to them again (because quite honestly, they don’t deserve such a rude treatment). Spend a day with them recollecting old memories, doing something that you used to do together before.
These people are puffs of glitter and rainbows and they deserve so much love. They give so much love and don’t expect anything in return. All they would like is to be a part of your priority list and a little bit of the love and affection that they have for you. Tell them that you love them and mean it! Giving time to someone and making time for someone are two totally different things. People who love you will always stick by your side, no matter what. We should understand that first before making a list of priorities. So take these people out of your “taken-for-granted” list and put them on top of your priority list. And do it fast, before you lose them and regret it later.
“The life you have left is a gift. Cherish it. Enjoy it now, to the fullest. Do what matters, now.”
― Leo Babauta
